LEGaTO gets involved in the sustainability dialogue

Act!Sustainable is a sustainability week organized by the Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg and LEGaTO partner institution Chalmers University of Technology.  Aimed at the students and staff at both universities, this event addresses the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set in the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.

Chalmers postdoctoral fellow Mustafa Abduljabbar presented the LEGaTO project at the event, addressing Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. LEGaTO's work is focused on energy-efficiency and productivity for both software and hardware which are being applied to healthcare, IoT for smart cities, machine learning and others. Abduljabbar talked about his group´s work on Xitao, a programming model that started as a resource-aware task-based runtime system that has been enhanced to target energy-efficient scheduling on heterogeneous platforms. This has resulted in up to 90% energy savings, which could mean more affordable and more environmentally friendly usage of modern consumer devices down the road.
